I'm afraid I can't help you with stopping the volcanic ash, but I have a somewhat far-fetched suggestion. It's only 640 km to Paris from Milan, and then about half that to London. Can you ride a bicycle? They are beautiful mechanical objects and often works of art. In an effort to not go into detail and bore you, I would just say riding one for a long period of time (especially when forced to) can be life-changing or even life-saving. If you don't believe me, just google "a bicycle saved my life". If you are unable to lessen your luggage and or physically cannot ride that long or spend that much time (although what alternative do you have, wait at a train station or airport hopelessly?), perhaps you have a motorcycle license and can hire one-way. It's a great way to travel, especially through Europe, I would imagine! I rode through the English countryside and plan to do it many more times. Good luck.
